Here’s what happened…

KDDI has announced the results of an internal investigation on why their 4G network suffered outages around the New Year holiday. It would stink to not be able to post that instagram picture of yourself upside down with a huge bottle of shochu sticking out of your mouth as you ring in the New Year. Glad I wasn’t hit by it, but then again, there’s no telling if Verizon will have the same issues or not. Here’s to hoping.

Two KDDI outages caused by human error in settings

KDDI (au) announced the cause of two network outages in its mobile device focused LTE data service around the end of the year that resulted in some mobile devices not being able to transmit data. The cause was that data usage exceeded projections combined with mistakes in the processing time settings and other human errors. The company will be doing comprehensive evaluations throughout this month to prevent reoccurrences.

In the case of the outage on 12/31 of last year, the amount of smartphone data in the network spiked to 7 times the amount just before. There was a mistake in the data processing time settings and it ended up being unable to complete data processing. In the outage on ½, there was no manual on how to fix a software malfunction, and so data transmission was temporarily halted.

The devices affected by the outages used the LTE data transmission service and included some smartphones like the iPhone 5 as well as tablets. During the outage on 12/31 lasted 4 hours, 23 minutes, and this month’s lasted 1 hour, 53 minutes, internet connectivity and mail did not work. Approximately 3,550,000 people were affected nationwide.
